Toyama-ryu Iaido is a form of standing iaido
designed for actual outdoor combat.
The essence of the art is the great technique of “Ittou ryoudan”,
which is the art of cutting with one sword.
The essence of the school is to train the mind and body
to become a KATSUJIN-KEN (a “live man’s sword”).

History

The Military Sword Manipulation Method was established over a period of 20 years based on ancient Japanese swordsmanship at the Army’s Toyama School for the study of infantry warfare techniques and the training of instructors in the former Army.
At that time, the practical skills of attack and defense after drawing the sword were trained in military swordsmanship (two-handed and one-handed military swordsmanship), but few people were proficient in handling military swords, including sword drawing and sword retention, and many were particularly inept at sword retention.

The ancient Japanese iai style was based on techniques from a seated position, but the Toyama style is designed for actual battle in the field, and therefore, the techniques are performed while standing. Toyama-ryu iai was established with the primary aim of “defeating the enemy,” which is the simplest and clearest concept in its conception. The history of the Toyama School closed when the former army ceased to exist, but after the lifting of the martial arts ban, it was passed on and developed as a cultural heritage that lives on in the present day.
Toyama School is the conclusion of Iaido in the world, and the latest and last Iaido in the world.

About BIZENKAI

Bizenkai

Bizen-kai offers a comprehensive experience of the original swordsmanship: Gekken (kendo), Iai (including kata), and Battou (test swordsmanship).
In “Gekken,” participants learn how to use a bamboo or wooden sword (warp and shinogi) and test their skills in a real swordfight. In “Iai,” participants learn how to use a mock sword, including how to pull a sword out of its sheath (Battou) and put it back in its sheath (Noutou), how to swing a sword and how to actually cut with a sword.
In “Battou”, students learn how to cut a rolled straw to make the blade line up, which cannot be experienced in Gekken and Iai.
Learning this series of swordsmanship also leads to a cultivation of the spirit of self reflection.
